AJS 216 - Basic Detention Academy

The Coconino Community College Basic Detention Academy provides an introduction to detention operations and training in ethics and professionalism, law, investigations, operations, reports and records, communication, custody and control, conflict and crisis management, defensive/control tactics, and medical and mental health issues. Completion of the program meets the training requirements of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department for employment as a Detention Officer

Course Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
Ethics and Professionalism

Students will:

  1. Evaluate ethical dilemmas encountered in the law enforcement and/or corrections fields, deciding on the correct ethical choice.
  2. Explain the values and purpose of officer integrity.

Constitutional and State Law

Students will:

  1. Explain legal definitions, concepts, and principles to Arizona law enforcement, corrections, and courts.
  2. Apply constitutional, statutory, procedural, and case law to real-life correctional situations.

Detention Operations

Students will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of all correctional operations and processes.
  2. Explain the basic principles of effective inmate supervision when working in a county jail or correctional facility.
  3. Demonstrate the components involved in booking, global, and incident searches.
  4. Identify the methods used and the purposes of institutional safety and how it relates to the structure and organization of inmate control and supervision.
  5. Communicate information in a clear and organized manner.
  6. Adapt to the diverse and multicultural nature of American society in the correctional setting.
  7. Explain the importance of inmate rights and essential services.
  8. Demonstrate physical fitness standards
  9. Demonstrate initial assessments of injuries and or illness and appropriate first aid procedures.
  10. Demonstrate defensive/control tactics. 
  11. Demonstrate problem solving skills in simulated hostage situations.
  12. Demonstrate problem solving skills in simulated riot situations.
