AHS 110 - Health Care Ethics and Law

Study of the central legal and ethical issues facing health care providers in today’s complex health care delivery system. Examine managed care, bioethics, telemedicine, death and dying, workplace and practice employment issues, and liability and malpractice through the use of case studies and scenarios.

Course Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
  1. apply the major principles of ethical reasoning to case studies;
  2. identify specific laws related to healthcare professionals and facilities;
  3. describe patients’ rights in relation to healthcare such as privacy rights;
  4. explain the impact of public health functions;
  5. recognize various ethical dilemmas across the lifespan with a focus on the beginning and end of life;
  6. analyze the major components of both access and quality in healthcare;
  7. describe the major factors influencing the costs of healthcare;
  8.  define legal and ethical terms used in healthcare.


Prerequisite(s): ENG 098 or higher English course or placement above ENG 098.
