BIO 181 - Unity of Life I: Life of the Cell Credits: 4 Lecture: Three lecture. Lab: Three lab.
An introductory course in Biology emphasizing central principles related to cellular structure and function. Course will include molecular structure, cell structure, reproduction, metabolism, and genetics.
Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- evaluate scientific questions using the scientific method and hypothesis testing;
- demonstrate an understanding of the molecular structure and function of biological molecules;
- demonstrate an understanding of basic cellular structure and function;
- demonstrate an understanding of enzyme-mediated metabolic reactions;
- demonstrate an understanding of cell signaling and signal transduction;
- demonstrate an understanding of cellular respiration;
- demonstrate an understanding of photosynthesis;
- evaluate patterns of genetic inheritance;
- demonstrate an understanding of cellular reproduction;
- demonstrate an understanding of the processes of DNA replication, transcription and translation;
- evaluate the impact of biotechnology on society;
- communicate the results of laboratory experiments using quantitative data
- evaluate data in a visual format (e.g. graph)
Prerequisite(s): ENG 098 or higher English course or placement above ENG 098. Pre/Corequisite(s): MAT 097 or higher math course or placement above MAT 097. General Education: Physical and Biological Sciences Grading Option: Letter Grade Only
