LET 270 - Community Relations Credits: 3 Lecture: 3 Lecture. Examination, recognition and understanding of community problems; community action programs; methods of coping with human behavior, victimology, conflict and communication; ethnic and minority cultures and environments; the community and relationships with the criminal justice system.
Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- describe the factors that influence the American community;
- trace the development of police/community programs;
- describe the use of authority as it relates to the police officer;
- describe the role of the police officer as a symbol of authority;
- describe the relationship between the courts and community and illustrate how this is a reflection of community politics;
- identify problem areas between corrections and the community and illustrate how these are a reflection of community politics;
- describe the relationship between community politics and the role of the police;
- identify and describe psychological variables that may influence human behavior;
- identify and describe sociological variables that may influence human behavior;
- identify and describe the major components involved in human conflict situations;
- describe the role of communication in police and community relations and identify barriers to effective communication;
- describe the organization and function of community relations units;
- identify and describe police/community programs;
- identify and describe future trends in police/community relations.
