LET 275 - Criminal Investigation I

Introduction to the theory of criminal investigation. Examines crime scene procedures, case preparation, interviewing, and basic investigative techniques.

Course Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
  1. define investigation and describe the goals and objectives of any criminal investigation;
  2. describe attributes and techniques of a successful investigator;
  3. define crime scene and describe the importance of protecting the crime scene;
  4. describe methods used to protect the crime scene;
  5. identify the methods of recording a crime scene and describe the proper procedures associated with each method;
  6. define evidence and describe methods of collecting, preserving, transporting, and analyzing various types of evidence;
  7. describe the importance of properly reporting a criminal incident;
  8. describe the principles, values, and uses of a proper police report;
  9. describe the steps involved in preparing for interviews, interrogation in criminal investigation, and identify common problems encountered in interviewing and interrogation;
  10. identify the steps involved in the identification of suspects in criminal investigation and identify common problems encountered during the identification process;
  11. describe the basic investigative steps involved in a variety of criminal investigations;
  12. describe the steps involved in criminal case preparation including case preparation;  
  13. define DNA evidence and describe its value and use in a criminal investigation;
  14. define social media and describe its value and use in a criminal investigation.
