LET 275 - Criminal Investigation I Credits: 3 Lecture: 3 Lecture. Introduction to the theory of criminal investigation. Examines crime scene procedures, case preparation, interviewing, and basic investigative techniques.
Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- define investigation and describe the goals and objectives of any criminal investigation;
- describe attributes and techniques of a successful investigator;
- define crime scene and describe the importance of protecting the crime scene;
- describe methods used to protect the crime scene;
- identify the methods of recording a crime scene and describe the proper procedures associated with each method;
- define evidence and describe methods of collecting, preserving, transporting, and analyzing various types of evidence;
- describe the importance of properly reporting a criminal incident;
- describe the principles, values, and uses of a proper police report;
- describe the steps involved in preparing for interviews, interrogation in criminal investigation, and identify common problems encountered in interviewing and interrogation;
- identify the steps involved in the identification of suspects in criminal investigation and identify common problems encountered during the identification process;
- describe the basic investigative steps involved in a variety of criminal investigations;
- describe the steps involved in criminal case preparation including case preparation;
- define DNA evidence and describe its value and use in a criminal investigation;
- define social media and describe its value and use in a criminal investigation.
