AIT 105 - Maintenance Operations


Credits: 3
Lecture: Two lecture.
Lab: Three lab.

Introductory course into the practice of modern maintenance operations. Includes: safely and correctly using maintenance tools (e.g., hand tools, power tools), measuring instrumentations (e.g., tape, caliper, micrometer) and reading various engineering documents (e.g., blueprints, flowcharts, parts diagrams). Use and convert units in System International (SI) and imperial. Basic discussion of industrial safety procedures, machine operations, troubleshooting, failure analysis, modern maintenance principles, rigging, workplace organization, and records keeping.

Course Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
1. perform machine operation including startup, emergency, and normal shutdown and  

       manual functions to effectively and safely meet production and maintenance

       requirements;

2. monitor machine operation and verify that performance meets production requirements;

3. locate, interpret, and store machine operation and maintenance documentation;

4. perform planned and unscheduled machine maintenance procedures in accordance with

     a company-approved maintenance plan;

5. perform a preventative maintenance procedure for a given machine to extend machine

     life and minimize downtime;

6. perform predictive maintenance on a given machine to extend machine life and

     minimize downtime;

7. interpret technical drawings of parts and assemblies with tolerances and basic
     GD&T;

8. use hand tools to inspect, adjust/tighten, and assemble/disassemble equipment to

     support preventive maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting activities;

9. use hoists and other tools to safely handle and move parts and equipment;

10. select and use troubleshooting methodologies to find malfunctions in machine systems

     to return the system to reliable, productive use in the shortest time possible;

11. demonstrate ethical behavior and industry professional standards;

12. practice effective oral and written communication;

13. achieve common goals through effective collaboration.
