ART 201 - Art History: Prehistoric to 1400 Credits: 3 Lab/Lecture: Three lecture.
Study of the historical development of significant periods and styles in painting, sculpture, and architecture from the prehistoric through the Gothic periods. Emphasis is placed upon the cultural context within which the works of art are created. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- discuss art history in the context of social, cultural, and economic changes in the world from the Paleolithic period through the 14th century;
- discuss the philosophies and values of the civilizations which influenced those works of art;
- analyze and evaluate significant historical trends which influenced the arts from the Paleolithic period through the 14th century;
- identify and appraise cultural and historical contexts, and their influence upon visual artists and architects;
- recognize the artistic heritage and production of diverse ethnic and racial groups, and thereby better appreciate and discuss their aesthetic and moral values;
- write critical and analytical responses to essay questions on course exams.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 . General Education: Arts/Humanities. Special Requirement(s): Contemporary Global/International Awareness or Historical Awareness.
