AHS 121 - Medication Management for the Certified Caregiver Credits: 1 Lab/Lecture: 1 Lecture.
This 16-hour course prepares the licensed CNA or LNA to become a Certified Caregiver. Topics to be taught include aspects of medication management within the scope of a certified caregiver. Students completing this course will be prepared to take the knowledge examination for certification by the Arizona Board of Nursing’s Care Institution Administrators and Assisted Living Facility Managers (NCIA/ALFM). Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- identify residents requiring assistance with medication management;
- list the five rights of a resident in medication administration;
- demonstrate how to assist a resident with medication administration;
- demonstrate how to observe and report changes in resident condition before and after medication administration;
- list classifications of various medications;
- understand metabolism and how health conditions affect medication absorption;
- interpret healthcare provider medication and treatment orders;
- demonstrate appropriate documentation and record maintenance of medication and treatment services
- describe proper storage of medications;
- describe proper documentation and storage of controlled substances;
- demonstrate the proper use of drug-reference guides, and;
- demonstrate how to appropriately prevent, identify, report, and document medication errors.
Prerequisite(s): CNA or LNA license in good standing and Food Handler’s Card (county of residence).
