SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology Credits: 3 Lab/Lecture: Three lecture.
Fundamental concepts of social organization, culture, race, ethnicity, socialization, social institutions, and social change. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- define sociology and explain how it differs from other social sciences;
- identify and describe the three main classical sociological theories: functional, conflict and symbolic interactionism;
- recognize the link between culture and society as it relates to values, beliefs, and norms;
- demonstrate how social structure is interconnected to social groups, status and roles;
- investigate the main agents of socialization: family, peers, and media;
- explain the link between perceived deviance and crime in the U.S.;
- describe sociological explanations of urban trends in the U.S.;
- and discuss collective behavior and social movements in the U.S.
General Education: Social/Behavioral Sciences. Special Requirement(s): Ethnic/Race/Gender Awareness.
