ENV 171 - Fundamentals of Environmental Science: Humans and the Environment

Lab/Lecture: Three lecture. Three lab.

Examine environmental problems that affect society by applying scientific methods to investigate and solve current and future challenges. An interdisciplinary overview of both living and nonliving interactions with a focus on humanity’s role in environmental systems.
Course Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
  1. use scientific inquiry to address questions and problems in environmental science;
  2. describe the physical and biological components of the Earth system;
  3. describe human impacts on the physical and biological components of the environment;
  4. explain the impact of environmental problems on individuals and society both locally and globally;
  5. interpret maps and graphs illustrating environmental problems and solutions;
  6. apply scientific methods to collect, analyze, interpret, display, and explain data related to environmental problems;
  7. analyze potential solutions to environmental problems including risks, costs, and benefits to society, individuals, and the environment;
  8. evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies (social, political, and technological) that address environmental problems arising from predicted climate change.
