EDU 230 - Cultural Diversity in Education Credits: 3 Lab/Lecture: Three lecture.
This course examines the relationship of cultural values and social contexts to the formation of the child’s self‑concept and success in the educational environment. An examination of the role of prejudice, stereotypes, institutional racism and sexism, and cultural incompatibilities in education will be included. Emphasis on considering different world views, preparing future teachers to offer an equal educational opportunity to children of all cultural groups, and considering course concepts in relationship to the work environment. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- explain how changing demographics influence public schools
- define the concept of multicultural education
- identify cultural influences on modes of communication, perception, and world view
- compare concepts of diversity, individual and institutional racism and sexism, prejudice, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, discrimination, segregation, desegregation, resegregation, assimilation, cultural pluralism, equity and equality.
- describe how the concepts of institutional racism and sexism, and equity and equal educational opportunity have evolved into educational practices and policy
- identify historical events and legal precedents for educational equity and equal educational opportunities
- compare and contrast high and low context cultures, and identify teaching strategies to work with diversity in the classroom environment
- illustrate examples of acculturation and enculturation
- reflect on events that shape one’s worldview, attitudes and behaviors towards diversity
- create a multicultural lesson
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101. Pre/Corequisite(s): ENG 102.
