TSM 101 - STEP 1: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching Mathematics Credits: 1 Lab/Lecture: One lecture.
This is a lab-based course for prospective secondary math/science teachers where students are introduced to the teaching profession through observations and teaching science or mathematics lessons in the K-12 setting. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- define and identify inquiry using specific examples of inquiry modeled in classroom instruction;
- design, teach, and reflect upon inquiry-based lessons;
- write objectives, essential questions, and formative assessments for each lesson;
- develop and utilize probing questions to determine students’ acquisition of knowledge;
- apply strategies that promote instructional equity;
- demonstrate basic proficiency in the use of technology;
- implement safe classroom practices;
- demonstrate classroom management strategies that assist in classroom instruction;
- reflect on instructional practices and impact on student learning;
- implement lesson openers and closures for each lesson.
