EDU 222 - Introduction to the Exceptional Student Credits: 3 Lab/Lecture: Three lecture.
Study of special education and the exceptional student with emphasis on factors relating to current practices, identification, and characteristics of the exception learner, one who differs from the average learner. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- explain the impacts of Americans with Disabilities Act;
- describe Universal Design for learning approach to inclusion, including examples of assistive technology;
- identify strengths and weaknesses of the various groups of children commonly classified as exceptional;
- describe the spectrum of services within a district for all exceptional learners;
- identify effective teaching strategies for each of the exceptionalities;
- review basic understanding of the etiologies of various conditions represented in special education;
- explain the importance of collaboration with other educators, parents and administration when serving the special needs population;
- identify qualities educators need for working with gifted students;
- research community and agency resources for exceptional learners;
- demonstrate familiarity of the physical, nutritional, cultural and environmental factors related to learning.
